That isn't to say we aren't looking forward to planning our trips for next year.
A couple of friends have asked how and why we plan so far in advance for our holidays so I thought I'd share -
Flights - the best prices for family flying are always available when flights first get released. Late October saw Easyjet release their Summer 2015 flights, Jet2 released theirs during July/August 2014. If you are travelling in Europe and wanted a bargain then GET MOVING, the best deals are out NOW and selling FAST!
For further afield most flights have been released and prices are set. It's simply a case of trawling through destinations and trying to find the deal to match your pocket. As we move into Winter lots of the long haul airlines will offer discounted fares, so between now and late January is probably your best chance to grab a bargain.
One tip for those who might have missed a bargain flight to Europe, don't despair. Just plan to fly later in the summer (mid August) and search for flights from Scottish airports. The school go back during early August so flights are cheaper and holidays cost less. From the North of the UK you can reach Glasgow and Edinburgh airports in 2-3 hours.
Accomodation - don't panic there is still lots of accommodation available for all but the busiest holiday destinations. In fact it's still so early in the booking stakes that many of the 'offers' aren't in place yet. We have always used companies like holidaylettings.com and tripadvisor to research accommodation, booking.com is also great for providing great prices. However where possible try and also contact the accommodation direct and ask for their best price. If it's cheaper on one of the booking sites tell the owner and haggle.
The key is don't panic there is plenty of time. Sort out flights first there is always somewhere to stay.
Other arrangements - transfers to and from the airport or accommodation in your resort are the last things to sort. But don't leave it too long. Car hire and airport parking deals are often at their best over the coming couple of months so look to get booked once your flights and accommodation is sorted. Grab a bargain by booking early, you will often find great deals like meet and greet car drop offs (ideal with the kids in tow) available for the same price as off site parking.
Most importantly of all. Have fun and talk to your family about what you are planning. Nothing builds anticipation and makes the whole holidaying as a family as much fun as sharing things as you go. You might even get some great ideas about what the kids are really looking forward to doing giving you plenty of time to make sure it happens. Happy kids = happy holidays.
