First off lets cut to the chase, the Cretan people are without doubt some of the kindest and most generous people we have ever encountered. It wasn't just our fabulous villa hosts, everywhere we went people were kind and generous and looking to provide great value and super service. Granted we were a little outside of the main 'tourist' destinations, choosing instead a villa up in the hills on the outskirts of a little village. To ensure we made the most of this we had to hire a car. Under 700 euros for 3 weeks was a fair price in the peak of the tourist season we felt.
Value for money was amazing in the local tavernas and restaurants, food was always tasty and plentiful and did I mention the people?
Situated in the small hamlet of Pigouniana less than 1km walk into Margarites, a small village famed for it's pottery and ceramics. We felt close enough to civilisation, with 5 or so eateries in easy walking distance but also close to nature with gorges and hills to walk through. Just around the corner was the amazing Tsilikario ceramic workshop where we asked about doing a pottery workshop. After making our pots we were told to return in 7 days and they would have dried, been fired and glazed. How much for this wonderful experience? Nada, zilch, zero, gratis, free!! Can you believe it? We couldn't. Another example of the amazing generosity displayed all over the island.
Don't forget to grab lunch at the Carob and Olive nearby.
Finally a small apology for being so quiet over the past few months, work commitments and personal life had taken over for a while.
Next year we are already discussing whether to spend a month in Mexico or Colombia, keep tuning in to see where we decide.
