We were met by William Bogarin one of the brothers who own the land. He told us all about how at 7 years old he had witnessed the huge volcanic eruptions of Arenal, a mountain that no one even knew was a volcano. That was in 1968.....now 50 years later he is a successful guide with an excellent knowledge of the plants and animals inhabiting his land. As everyone who knows me will testify, I like value for money. So just imagine how much I began to sweat when I found out it was $35 each for the guided tour...$140 for us all to walk around some woods for a couple of hours!
Well can I just say it was worth every penny...or cent...or colones or whichever currency you choose to use. William was friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. His wildlife spotting was first rate and his scope was invaluable in capturing some amazing images.
Regardless, William did not disappoint. Ten sloths later and we were, if not record holders, then at least satisfied that sloths were really here. Frank described today as "Simply the best!" having seen his most favourite animal. If you visit Costa Rica, and La Fortuna in particular then please look up the Bogarin Trail.
After grabbing a quick snack ($40!!!!) for lunch we headed to the La Fortuna waterfall. A knee wrenching 560 steps down into the valley and thigh building 560 steps back up! Was it worth it? Well the waterfall was impressive, the water was freezing but the boys loved swimming in the river with it's rather strong current.
A fabulous day all round! So good that we are planning to head our for pizza to round it all off!
