For instance, Calakmul, a wonderous, jungle bound, Mayan site in the southern Yucatan peninsula. A day trip to Calakmul entailed an early start from our hotel in the crocodile infested village of Zoh Laguna, just outside of the small town of Xpujil in the state of Campeche. Following a relatively easy drive along the highway you suddenly turn off to the left and into the jungle. The local indigenous community control access to the site and have built a single track paved road (of dubious quality in places) for visitors to drive into the site. 90 minute of driving surrounded by nothing but jungle is an experience, the road twists and turns, there's places where it widens and there are endless signs to watch out for jaguar, turkeys and various other wildlife.
See the following images to get a sense of the amazing place that is Calakmul.
Not to mention the amazing views from the top of the various temples.
Needless to say, we would highly recommend a trip into the jungle. It won't be busy, buses can't travel on the road it's too tight, and the number of tourists making the trip is minimal. It's a large site, spread over a huge area, on the day we visited there were less than 100 visitors. So make the most of your very own Indiana Jones experience and visit Calakmul.
Top tips - sunscreen, mozzie spray, water, mozzie spray, more water, a hat, camera, water again and some mozzie spray. We weren't bitten but we had plenty of spray with us, it was certainly a good move as the strenuous climbs up the big three pyramids left us sweating buckets and needing to recover ourselves frequently.
One of the highlights of our whole trip for all four Lockey on Holiday.
