Home to 3 types of sea turtle, Tortuguero is a barrier island nestled on the Caribbean coast of North Eastern Costa Rica. It's a huge area of protected waterways and secondary jungle aimed at repairing the damage done over 40 years of logging hard woods in the area.
One of the things that makes Tortuguero so interesting to visit is the isolations. To reach it you either have to shell out $150 each way for a light aircraft flight into the airstrip, or use one of the two waterway routes in from either Moin (3 hours and $40) or La Pavona (1 hour and $4 return). Guess which one we chose?
At 10,000 colones around £13 for all 4 of us and our luggage we set off from the 'dock' in La Pavona.
